The steering wheel is attached to a steering column, which is linked to rods, pivots and gears that allow the driver to change the direction of the front wheels. The mechanism may include a rack and pinion mechanism that converts several turns of the steering wheel into a large linear displacement.

Suspension Problems

You may not think a lot about your car's suspension system, but if it fails, it can quite literally stop you in your tracks. Driving with a broken or worn out suspension system not only puts unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle's tires, but it can put you—and others on the road—at serious risk.

• Vibration: If the steering wheel vibrates or pulsates, especially when turning, this could be a sign of power steering problems.
• Fluid leaks: A red or pink fluid under your car, especially near the front wheels, could be a sign of a power steering fluid leak. A leak can cause the steering to become stiff or unresponsive.
• Suspension Noises: The most obvious are springs and wishbones cracking, bushings collapsing, air bags splitting and shock absorbers breaking.
• What does a bad suspension feel like: If your vehicle has suspension issues, you may feel nearly every bump and dip in the road.
